Part 1: 6 Types of Rowing Machines

Model:Rowing Machine Type:
Air Rowing machines:Main type used in commercial settings. Preferred option for fitness fanatics and the faster you row the more air resistance you get (example Concept2)
Magnetic Rowing machines:Basic type machines and usually available for less than £300 where magnets are placed next to the flywheel to create the resistance. Magnets can be placed closer to increase the levels of resistance and don’t tend to be as smooth
Mag-Air Rowing machines:Air and magnetic resistance systems combined offer a lower cost than standard air rowing machines. Less smooth but still many programmes available and makes if more affordable for the average home user
Water Rowing machines:The rowing is completed by pulling the paddles through a tank of water and the resistance is generated through water and usually made from wood. These can be more difficult to store when not in use and cannot be folded or separated.
Hydraulic Rowing machines:Low priced alternatives that work off a piston system and should be avoided if you weigh over 10 stone in our opinion or if you intend to use it for intense sessions daily
Elastic Cord Rowing Machines:Again, a low-priced alternative that uses an elastic cord and for people who need to work off the lowest possible price. The elasticity can be lost over time through general wear and tear so you always check you have a min of 1 year warranty

Before you begin, please note that guide price levels can only be shown at the time of this Best Rowing Machine review as prices can change slightly from month to month depending on local discount activities so please make sure to view the price checkers outlined below to ensure you have the most accurate up to date price information.

Part 2: Tips when buying a Rowing Machine

  • Console Monitor – make sure that the console has the capability to report back on your workout sessions especially when it comes to split times, stroke rate, times, calories and distances
Tablet Holder – If you wish to get connected to apps, watch videos or listen to music, make sure that your chosen rowing machine provides you with a reliable tablet holder and the console app compatibility.
  • Seat Comfort – avoid hard type plastic seats and ensure the saddle seat has a deep padded foam which will reduce the levels of discomfort.
  • Transport wheels – Some rowing machine will be too difficult to carry so make sure your chosen unit has transport wheels on the lower feet for easier mobility around your home
  • Smooth rowing – the rowing motion needs to be smooth at all times even when resistance levels change be it the pull cord, chains or the seat rollers. An example of a chain that gives smoother action for longer is a nickel-plated steel chain.
  • Foot Holds – for maximum comfort for your feet, make sure that the foot holds can be adjusted to suit your own posture and size for optimal rowing sessions.
  • Folding – Is space a problem? If so, choose only the models that offer a foldable solution that can be separated into 2 pieces or folded up
  • Weight – always double check the maximum user weight capacity before you buy. The last thing you want to do is buy a rowing machine with a weight capacity of 100kg when your own weight could be beyond this. (some models here have a weight capacity of up to 150kg)
  • Monorail length – before you buy, you should always check that the monorail length is a minimum of 1.2m to prevent your seat hitting the end of the rowing machine. This would be suited for people up to 6 feet 4 inches
  • Warranty – always ensure you get a minimum of 12 months warranty with your chosen rowing machine when buying, many on this list offer a lot longer than just 12 months.

  1. Hey thank you for the awesome post!  I really enjoyed reading these reviews because I have been needing to get a good rowing machine.  The one that looks like it is right up my alley is the Men’s Health, Dual Resistance Air and Magnetic Rowing Machine.  The price is also great in my opinion!

  2. Bought this black ‘IGNITE AIR’ Indoor Rower in September. I bought the Rower for myself and also my boys…it was incredibly well packaged and was really easy to put together… Apart from needing my son a couple of times to hold one side, I put it together on my own. It’s been wonderful ever since I got it

  3. Thanks for these great tips on buying a rowing machine. Tell me is it more for the arms or the legs? I am very unsure here, as sometimes I feel it more in the arms, and others in the legs. I would have never thought twice about some of the points you mentioned, but now I know to avoid the piston system or plastic cord. My hubby is rather heavy and I would want the machine to last. I think my best bet would be the air rowing machines and I must just now find one that is easy to store. From this list I do like the Reebok rowing machine as i have used their fitness equipment before – they work well and don’t cost an arm and a leg (pardon the pun!)

    • Yes, the Reebok model would be an excellent choice and it certainly meets a lot of our own expectations – it works equally as good on your legs as well as your arms. Many thanks for your time and best of luck with your final decision. Regards, John

  4. Wow this is a very important and informative article – I have been looking to get a reliable rowing machine for the new year – although I have used the Reebok GR Electronic rowing machine before, I felt it was just ok but it doesn’t just suit my style of training so I think would get one of the other products you listed here such as the JTX Ignite or the Concept 2. Thanks a lot for compiling this list as I think my long search is finally over.

  5. Hello there thanks for this awesome article, It is really of help to the public as it has been for me. My friend has a Concept 2 rowing machine for the past 4 years and it works perfectly even now. It is beyond my own budget level so the Men’s health option certainly works better for me from a pricing point of view anyway.

  6. Hello John! These machines are good ideas for people who want to practice sports and keep fit without having to leave their homes and paying monthly/yearly gym subscriptions. Rowing involves a large part of the human muscles (up to 85%) and it is helpful not only for burning calories & preventing useless fats from accumulating, but it also leads to a better muscle mass when practiced regularly.I think the Reebok GR machine gives an affordable price and a satisfying warranty (2 years). The Sportstech rowing equipment may be a good choice too. Kind regards, Peter
